Safari Companion (FAQ)
This Safari Companion is essentially a guide to commonly asked questions about a safari at Impodimo Game Lodge.
What is the weather like?
The summer (October ? March) is generally warm to hot during the day with temperatures ranging from 28 degrees Celsius to 40 degrees Celsius cooling off a little at night. Summer is when we get most of our rain, normally in the form of thundershowers in the late afternoons.
Winter (April ? September) days are warm to mild from 28 degrees to 22 degrees with nights and early mornings being cool to cold with temperatures getting down as low as 2 to 5 degrees in the coldest months (July and August) with occasional frost.
When is the best time to visit Impodimo Game Lodge?
Every season is special in the bush. The summer rain brings lush greenery and long thick grass which is very beautiful but reduces visibility. It is also the time when there are a lot of baby antelope around and game is attracted to open areas to graze on seasonal grasses. Game drives are usually taken in the early morning and late afternoon and evening to avoid the heat of the day and when the game is most active.
The winter is very dry and the bush turns from green to brown, grey and khaki as the trees loose their leaves and the grass dries out. This thinning out of the greenery improves visibility and the dry weather forces game to drink at the larger waterholes which makes them easier to find. Game drives are taken usually a little later in the morning and even during the day and the early afternoon with short evening drives to avoid the coldest part of the day.
What is the dress code?
Although there is no formal dress code we do suggest neutral coloured clothing for safaris as these are less obtrusive in the bush. A comfortable pair of walking shoes are a must for a walking safari and a windproof jacket is useful for those cool winter evening drives. As there is a swimming pool to cool off in you may want to bring some swim wear. No safari would be complete without an Impodimo hat! Our shop carries a range of safari clothing that you may buy.
What else should we bring?
Cameras, binoculars and video cameras can all improve your safari experience, and help to capture that fantastic sighting for ever. Cameras with zoom lenses give better results and good digital cameras with optical zooms can take excellent pictures. Binoculars with wide fields if vision and magnification between 8x and 12x are ideal. Compact binoculars are excellent for walking trails. Sun screen is essential on safari and it is recommended that you bring some of your own if you require a particular brand or a hypo-allergenic type. Our game drive vehicles do carry a supply of sun screen which we encourage our guests to use.
Children?
Children are welcome at Impodimo and we love to go out of our way to ensure that kids and parents both have an unforgettable safari experience. Kids may participate in our kiddies program, where the children are entertained and occupied with fun and educational activities. Each child on arrival will receive a personalised pack with goodies and activities to do in between safaris. Some of the supervised activities include biscuit baking and decoration, plaster casting of animal tracks, paper mask making, and art using leaves and seeds collected whilst enjoying a guided educational kiddies walk around the camp! Baby sitting facilities are available, so that parents can enjoy a safari or dinner without having to worry about their children. Children over the age of 6 years are allowed to join the normal safari (at the ranger’s discretion), however families with younger children need not fear that their kids wont be allowed on safari. We offer the “kiddies bumble” safari which is much shorter and aimed at younger children, avoiding deliberate close encounters with dangerous game and making the experience more tactile and varied in order to keep their attention.
